Pendant lights for high ceilings, open spaces & galleries – what you really need to pay attention to

Pendant lights made of mouth-blown glass hang above a dining table.

High ceilings, open galleries, and two-story staircases create impressive architecture – but also place special demands on lighting. Conventional pendant lights are often too short, lose their effectiveness at higher heights, or cannot be adjusted flexibly enough.

To prevent this from happening to you, we've compiled the most important planning tips. At the end, you'll also find a direct recommendation for our curated collection for high ceilings.

1. The correct suspension height – not too short, not too low

For room heights of 3.5 meters, 5 meters, or even more, the pendant height of the light fixture is crucial for how harmonious it appears. Basic rules:

  • Above open areas: Choose the pendant height according to the visual effect – not too high, otherwise the lights will “disappear”.
  • Above tables: approximately 60–80 cm above the tabletop.
  • In stairwells: plan for sufficient distance to railings and passageways.

Many high-quality light fixtures now offer cable lengths of up to 10 meters and can be individually shortened. This allows you to precisely match the light fixture to the architecture of your room.

2. Pay attention to the cable length – standard lengths are rarely sufficient.

Standard pendants usually only have a cable length of 1.5–2 meters . For open spaces or galleries, this is often far too short.

When buying, you should definitely check:

  • Maximum cable length of the model
  • Shortenability (not every light fixture can be easily shortened)
  • Optional extensions – some manufacturers offer extensions.

Our collection contains only models that can hang for a very long time and can be easily shortened.

3. Multiple pendants on one electrical outlet? – Use a multi-pendulum canopy.

A common request: several lights as a cluster or statement grouping above stairs or open areas – but only one existing ceiling connection.

There is an elegant solution for this: the multiple canopy .

Advantages:

  • Up to 3, 5, 7 or more pendulums on ONE connection
  • Clean look without visible cables
  • ideal for open spaces, two-story staircases and large entrance areas

Cluster or ring solutions quickly create an architectural highlight with a strong spatial impact.

4. Lighting effect: Direct, indirect, or both?

In rooms with high ceilings, the effect of light is quickly lost. Therefore, it's worth taking a close look at the optics of the light fixture:

  • Direct light: perfect for accentuation, but more focused.
  • Indirect light: ideal for gently illuminating large rooms.
  • Combination: modern LED designer lights often offer both at the same time.

CRI values (color rendering index) also play a role; from CRI 90 upwards, light appears particularly high-quality and natural.

5. Material & Design – large rooms need clean lines

In order for a pendant light to have its full effect in a large room, it should:

  • possess a clear design language
  • have a certain length or presence
  • Use high-quality materials

Popular choices include narrow light bars, modern ring systems, or minimalist pendants – they appear light, yet architecturally strong.

6. Installation & Safety – especially important in airspace

At great heights, professional installation is absolutely essential. Pay attention to the following:

  • adequately dimensioned ceiling mounting
  • strain-relieved cable routing
  • correct shortening of the pendulums
  • Plan for possible installation using ladders or scaffolding.

Especially with cluster solutions or long commutes, hiring a professional installer is worthwhile.
